Abstract
Key leadership competencies in young adults between the ages of 14-22 are examined as they participate in performing arts education and programs. It also examines prominent leadership competencies necessary in today’s business culture. With these two areas of focus, the key leadership competencies analyzed are collaboration, communication, problem solving, innovation, resiliency, and emotional intelligence. The project cross examines each competency between the two groups to answer the research question if participation in the performing arts as a young adult fosters key leadership skills necessary in today’s business culture. Use of scholarly articles, peer reviewed journals, educational curriculum guides, quantitative analysis, a survey, and the authors own life experience are used in this analysis. The research presented suggests those young adults who are actively engaged in performing arts programs adequately gain the necessary leadership skills in some, if not all, the six key competencies outlined.
